EQUELLA Active Cache
Today’s rich media learning objects are large in size, network intensive and as a consequence often require end users to patiently wait, often for significant periods of time, while an object is located and accessed. This is especially true if the user is located in a remote school, office or campus. One of the most significant issues that face the practical use of eLearning materials today is the ability for organisations that are spread across multiple locations to provide sufficiently fast networking access. Networking delays experienced while attempting to use eLearning materials are typically the result of a local computer having to contact a centrally located server, which typically contains such content, via a local area network or the Internet. To address this issue The Learning Edge International has developed the Active Cache as part of EQUELLA’s suite of tools. The EQUELLA Active Cache solves performance problems by ensuring that the latest relevant eLearning objects are stored, or cached, locally at the remote site. To achieve this, The EQUELLA Active Cache synchronises with the central EQUELLA Digital Repository on a nightly basis. New learning materials are downloaded in periods of low network activity and stored in a site’s local web cache. When an end user requests an object, the local version is accessed thus ensuring rapid response with minimal delay.
