Copyright Management
EQUELLA is leading the way in supporting effective Copyright Management of digital learning content at institutions globally. Copyright management consists of a layer of digital rights management metadata, and business rules that are wrapped around content so that no matter what system it is being accessed from, the copyright associated with that content is always protected.
EQUELLA provides a convenient method for institutions to manage materials they copy and use in two ways – Digital Rights Management and eReserve.
Digital Rights Management
EQUELLA provides a generic digital rights management (DRM) tool based on ODRL (Open Digital Rights Language) that can be used in a variety of ways to manage digital rights for items uploaded to the repository.
Common uses of this DRM capability include:
- Attribution of moral rights ownership for instructors within an institution
- Displaying copyright licensing conditions on purchased content for end user acceptance and tracking usage
- Limiting the use of content in a variety of ways to enforce copyright conditions
The EQUELLA DRM module provides options for administrators or end-user contributors to specify certain restrictions on content availability, such as number of accesses, dates of access, users/groups allowed to access or valid IP ranges. A list of all users who have accepted the copyright (DRM) usage provisions on an item is also available to authorised users for viewing or reporting purposes.
eReserve
EQUELLA provides eReserve functionality that enables institutions to manage online IP-restricted materials effectively.
EQUELLA’s eReserve capabilities are specifically targeted at the management of articles and chapters copied under the provisions of various Copyright Acts, allowing EQUELLA users to automatically restrict communication of material to within defined copyright limits, and automatically report on usage, as required. EQUELLA supports the concurrent use of Australian Copyright Agency Limited (CAL) and the United Kingdom Copyright Licensing Agency Limited (CLA) agreements at this time.
The EQUELLA copyright compliance features include the ability to activate specific digital content (generally book chapters and journal articles) for particular periods of time against a course, and validates each activation against all currently communicated content to ensure compliance with local copyright laws. EQUELLA automatically tracks content usage of the activated items and produces the appropriate reports, reducing the reporting work load for institutions. The copyright features are simple to configure and provide custom activation error messages and copyright status agreements for display to users.
